Overview

Cold weather shouldn't stop you from experiencing the magical phenomena and the magnificent marine life that thrive in winter conditions. Spot whales, fish for cod, and maybe witness the cold mists as they blanket the ocean's surface and the Northern Lights as they dance across the sky. A winter trip on the fjords of Alta is a magical experience not to miss!

What to expect?

Whale safaris are among the most popular attractions in Northern Norway, attracting millions of tourists to Troms for several years. In recent years, the large mammals have migrated further north towards Finmark and Alta, making these areas the perfect spots to experience these spectacular animals first-hand and up-close.

The two most common species found in the Altafjord are sperm whales and killer whales (orcas), and they remain in the area for the most of winter. You also have a good chance of spotting harbor porpoises and harbor seals along the way.

On this 4-6 hour Whale Watching Tour, you will be provided with an experienced captain/guide, tour, coveralls (six available), fishing rods (six available), life jackets, and a lunch with a hot beverage. The team requires participants to wear warm and suitable clothing for this activity. Such could include warm headwear, mittens, and footwear.

In addition to whales, the region's fantastic light conditions during the darker periods can make the Northern Light appear earlier on the shorter days.

As this trip depends entirely on weather conditions, if the conditions aren't suitable or there is a lot of fog, it is not possible to see whales. In this case, you will either wait until the weather clears up or be provided with an alternative excursion.

Please note that as the Northern Lights, whales, and sea mist are natural phenomena, they may not always be visible on every tour. Regardless, the experienced team will try their best to accommodate. Furthermore, the catching of fish is also dependent on weather and wind.

Please note:
- Group size restricted to a maximum of 4 people.
- They only have six pieces of coveralls and six fishing rods available.
- The tour is available weekly with flexible starting times (subject to availability).
- Alcohol is not allowed on board.
- There are options for pick-up from selected locations. Note that pick-up is 30 minutes before event booking. Additional fees apply.
