What to expect?
Your day begins in Rovaniemi, where your outdoor guide will pick you up directly from your accommodation. You will then head toward the canyon and nature reserve of Korouoma, with a drive of around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Upon arrival, your guide will provide you with ice-cleats that fit over your own shoes, ensuring a safe and comfortable hike even on icy or slippery paths.
You will then start hiking down into the canyon, stopping at the best viewpoints to admire the breathtaking frozen waterfalls. The landscape is magical – towering icy walls, peaceful pine forests, and pristine snow-covered cliffs. You may even catch a glimpse of ice climbers scaling the frozen cascades as you walk along the canyon trail.
The total hike is about 5 km, moving through forest trails, down into the canyon, and along the river and cliffs. Your private guide will adapt the pace of the walk to suit your group and share insights into Arctic nature, local traditions, and their passion for life in Lapland.
Midway through the excursion, you’ll enjoy a barbecue break in the wilderness, where a freshly grilled burger is prepared over an open fire, a cozy and delicious moment outdoors. In spring, private tours can also start in the afternoon to avoid busier times; in that case, this is replaced by a sweet snack break.
After the hike, you will return to Rovaniemi, bringing back the memory of a truly special day in Lapland.
IMPORTANT: The hike follows a 5 km trail with some steep or slippery sections; this is why we provide ice-cleats to ensure your safety and comfort. While the route doesn’t require technical hiking skills, it does require a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to walk confidently over uneven terrain. As this is a private tour, children aged 6 and over are welcome, as long as they can walk the full trail. Participants should be in good physical condition and free of mobility impairments.
Korouoma Canyon is a protected nature reserve and an important bird-nesting area. To help protect its delicate ecosystem, a few simple rules apply: no drones, no picking plants or flowers, and no pets. We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel and always aim to offer a peaceful experience in nature. Whenever possible, we adapt the timing of our tours to avoid peak hours and reduce our impact on the environment.
Please note that while we do our best to avoid crowds, Korouoma is a popular destination, and we cannot guarantee complete solitude during the visit.
