What to expect?
Korouoma is 30-kilometres long and up to 130-meters deep canyon fracture valley located 110 kilometres south-east of Rovaniemi. It offers breathtaking scenery all year, with cliffs, rapids and waterfalls. This natural reserve is also home to rare species, and a great nature area for hikers. In the wintertime, the waterfalls turn into fantastic ice formations which are well-known for ice-climbing and a great attraction for tourists coming from all around the world.
Your guide will drive you to Korouoma Canyon for a nice hike in the nature reserve. You will have the chance to enjoy the incredible peaceful atmosphere of local forests. Depending on the time of the year, you can observe all the colours and shades the Arctic nature offers! In the spring and summer months, Korouoma is an all-green oasis of silence, where you can fully recharge your batteries. In the autumn, nature shows its beauty in a truly colourful way! In Finland, we call this transitional period into the long winter ahead “Ruska”. The leaves on the trees turn to the most indescribable shades of gold, orange and red before they will be covered up by layers upon layers of snow and ice.
As you hike across the canyon, your guide will keep an eye on wildlife and flora and teach you more about nature and your surroundings. With a bit of luck, you may even spot tracks made by wolves, lynx, wolverines, moose, reindeer, weasels or Arctic hare.
Refreshments and a typical Finnish barbecue snack will be served around the open fire to keep your adventure mood. This is a great opportunity for your guide to show you how to build a fire as natives do. No need for matches or a lighter, your guide will use flint & steel and natural materials you can find in the nature that surrounds you (we can do this in conditions as cold as -30°C). Lunchtime is also a great moment for your guide to share their passion and knowledge and answer all your questions about nature, Lapland and life in the Arctic.
The excursion lasts around 7 hours, including transportation, hiking and the convivial time around the fire. You will be back at Rovaniemi around 16:00.
In all our activities, our groups are limited to 8 people maximum. It is very important for us to provide you with the best experience possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. As we usually say - the smaller the group, the bigger the experience!
Pick-up/drop-off from any accommodation within 10 km of the city centre.
