What to expect?
Lake Mývatn and its surroundings are a must-see when exploring North Iceland. This small-group tour combines dramatic waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, and geothermal wonders in a relaxed and easy-paced day.
We begin by driving along the coast of Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland’s longest fjords. Our first stop is the impressive Goðafoss, known as the Waterfall of the Gods, before continuing toward Lake Mývatn.
Lake Mývatn was formed by a massive basaltic lava eruption around 2,300 years ago. The area is shaped by volcanic landforms such as lava pillars, rootless vents, and unique crater formations.
Next, we stop at the geothermal area of Hverarönd in Námaskarð. Here you will see steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and colorful sulphur deposits, with a strong geothermal scent in the air.
The journey continues to Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Fed by glacial water from Vatnajökull, the waterfall crashes 45 meters down into a dramatic canyon.
On the return trip, we explore the dark lava formations of Dimmuborgir, often compared to a medieval castle. We also visit Skútustaðagígar, an area famous for its beautifully shaped pseudo craters around Lake Mývatn.
Our final stop is back in Eyjafjörður, where you can enjoy views across the fjord toward Akureyri, rounding off a full day of iconic North Iceland scenery.
