What to expect?
Hike to the top of the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. The perfect day hike with challenging terrain and rewarding views into the Highlands, Mýrdalsjökull and the Vestmannaeyjar Islands. Perfect add on to your South Coast travel.
At the farm Seljavellir, by Seljavallalaug, we start the hike up to the snowline/glacier part. Your guide will brief you thoroughly and hands out the gear for the glacier part. The foothills are steep, and your guide will make sure that you go at a slow and even pace. Upon reaching the glacier at around 950m (about 3116 ft) we rope up. The vertical ascent is around 1.600 meters, and the climbing can take from 9 – 12 hours. You will need to be both physically and psychologically prepared for such a long day and make sure you have the right clothing and good boots. Please read the suggested equipment list carefully.
Once you reach the highest point you will have a remarkable view over the crater which erupted in 2010 as well as the areas to the north and the south. Descent down the same route with views over the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby Vestmannaeyjar Islands. This day tour checks in all the boxes: amazing views, geological wonders, and a challenging hike.
Please note
You drive road nr1, the ring road heading out to the South Coast. As you get closer to the picturesque Eyjafjallajökull Volcano you see why it attracts hikers from all over.
At the start of the hike, you will get a safety briefing from your expert mountaineering guide and the necessary gear for the hike.
The hike up this mountain is quite challenging, but the views on the way and at the summit are the ultimate reward.
After descending the mountain, you can drive back to Reykjavík or continue your South Coast tour.

What to bring
For your hike, pack a backpack (30–45L) with waterproof and windproof breathable clothing, including trousers and a jacket. Wear sturdy walking shoes and leg covers, along with a long-sleeved top made of wool or synthetic materials and hiking pants. Bring wool or hiking socks, a warm sweater (wool or fleece), and an extra sweater or a light down/fiber jacket for breaks or colder days. Include a hat and mittens (both thin and thick), good sunglasses (cat. 3–4), and sunscreen for face and lips (SPF 30 or higher). Pack lunch such as sandwiches, chocolate, and other snacks, and water (up to 2L—check with your guide). Optional items include a camera and adjustable walking poles. In early spring (April–May), warmer clothing is necessary, and it may also be useful to bring ski goggles and windproof mittens.
