What to expect?
Reached via an hour-long hike and entered by way of an open cable lift, a descent of 120 metres, the ground space inside the volcano is equivalent in size to around three basketball courts, and the cavity could easily fit the Statue of Liberty.Following an eruption magma chambers usually collapse, but in Þríhnúkagígur the lava drained out like water from a pipe leaving the volcano's plumbing system empty. The Þríhnúkagígur crater is therefore one of the only few places in the world where you can enter a magma chamber.Minimum age: 12 years oldPlease note: - You need walking/hiking shoes - 3.5 km each way hike - Wear warm clothes - trainers and jeans is not sufficient - Minimum age: 8 years old - The tour includes hiking across uneven ground. - Hiking boots are required. - The weather can be severe, so dress appropriately.
