Viðey Island is a peaceful retreat just minutes from the city, where history, art, and unspoiled nature come together.
The island is known for its rich birdlife, scenic walking paths, and its strong connection to Iceland’s cultural heritage.
One of Viðey’s most famous landmarks is the Imagine Peace Tower, created by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon as a symbol of world peace.
Other highlights include Viðey Church, Viðeyjarstofa Café, the Old School House, and the island’s historic cabins.
The island rises 32 metres above sea level and covers 1.6 km², made up of Heimaey and Vesturey.
Along the coastline you can see striking rock formations, while the island is also home to over 150 plant species, representing a third of Iceland’s flora.
Þórsnes peninsula is protected during the bird breeding season from 1 May to 1 July, when species such as eider ducks and many others nest on the island.
About 30 bird species come here each year to raise their young.
In summer, the Reykjavík City Museum hosts special events and activities on Viðey.
Check the local event schedule to see what is happening during your visit.
Viðey is a national treasure and visitors are asked to help protect it by staying on marked paths and respecting wildlife.
Please keep a safe distance from cliffs, avoid disturbing nests, and recycle your waste to help preserve the island for future generations.
