What to expect?
This tour promises the best of Hornstrandir's wild beauty, from the six million birds nesting on the cliffs to the Arctic Foxes that casually wander the area. The untouched, pristine landscape will leave you breathless, and you may return from this trip a changed person.
Accommodation will be in comfortable 2-person tents with a larger, heated cooking/eating tent where you can socialize and dry off your gear.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1:
Meeting point at Aðalstræti 17 for briefing.
Departure from the harbor in Ísafjörður on our passenger ferry.
1-2 hour boat ride to Veiðileysufjörður, with a chance to spot humpback whales.
Inflatable boat transfer to the beach, the start of the hike towards Hornvík.
Hike through Hafnarskarð Pass to Hornvík Bay.
Settle into basecamp, and enjoy a home-cooked meal.
Day 2:
Traverse the Hornbjarg bird cliffs.
Possible sighting of Arctic foxes.
Hike across the black sand beaches towards the old farm of Horn.
Take in the view from Horn, hike along the grassy slope next to the cliff’s edge to Mt. Miðfell.
Head to Miðdalur valley, where locals used to collect bird eggs.
Visit the small lake in Miðdalur, walk over the ridge of Múli, and head back to the farm.
Boat pick-up around 2-3pm for a transfer back to Ísafjörður.
Please note: The itinerary may be subject to changes depending on the weather, sea conditions, and the group's ability.
Good to know
The tour difficulty level is challenging.
Remember that everything you bring, you will have to carry on your back throughout the hike, so try to pack light while ensuring you have all the essentials.
We will provide the tents, sleeping bag, mattress, and pillow. However, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag liner and pillow cover.
Binoculars can be a good addition for wildlife watching.
