What to expect?
The tour starts at Jernbanetorget, where your Tour Guide will meet you at our base camp outside of Oslo Bike Rental on the east side of Oslo Central Station. After a short briefing, we will then hop on electric tram, or "trikk" as the locals say, and take a short ride through the city over to Aker Brygge. This modern part of the city is a vibrant waterfront district renowned for its trendy restaurants, shops, art galleries, and scenic promenade overlooking the Oslo Fjord. From there, we will board one of the city's fully electric public transportation ferries and start our Island Hopping adventure.
Our first ferry ride takes less than ten minutes and brings us to the island of Hovedøya. This historic island in the Oslo Fjord is known for its medieval monastery ruins dating back to the 12th century. Here we can explore the atmospheric abbey ruins, wander through the monastery cemetery, and enjoy a scenic walk along one of the island's trails, offering a peaceful retreat from the city hustle. Along the way you will also see some evidence of the military history of the island, soak in beautiful panoramic views of the fjord and even have an opportunity to take a quick swim at one of Hovedøya's many beaches.
Next, we hop back aboard the ferry and enjoy a lovely cruise over to Nakholmen Island. The ferry ride will take about 25 minutes and we will make three additional stops along the way where we will stay on the boat, while still getting a glimpse of some of the neighboring islands.
Nakholmen is very different from Hovedøya is many ways, but probably the most significant is the fact that it is inhabited. Nakholmen has around 180 charming little coastal cottages where families continue the long standing tradition of spending their summer holidays and weekends here. It's a special little piece of Norwegian paradise and a great example of the importance of cabin culture in the country.
From Nakholmen, we will catch a ferry back to Aker Brygge. The ride will take about 20 minutes and will allow us one last chance to take in the beauty of the fjord and it's surroundings. Once back "on dry land" we will hop back aboard the tram to Jernbanetorget, where we began our journey.
Overall the journey will last around 4 hours (including time spent on on public transportation) but may be adjusted due to inclement weather. Please bring a swimsuit with you if you would like to take a quick dip in the fjord!
