Trondheim: 7-Day Holiday Package Atlantic Road & Dovre

This seven-day self-drive itinerary explores mountain landscapes, wildlife regions and coastal routes in central Norway. The journey begins in Trondheim, a historic city located along the Nidelva River. After arrival you collect your rental car and spend the first evening exploring the city centre and harbour area.

The route then heads south toward Dovrefjell National Park. This mountain plateau is one of the few places in mainland Europe where musk ox live in the wild. During your stay you join a guided safari that explores the national park on foot while searching for these Arctic animals.

From Dovrefjell the journey continues west toward the fjord landscapes of the Romsdal region. In Åndalsnes you ride the Romsdalen Gondola which climbs from sea level to a mountain plateau overlooking the Romsdal valley.

The route then follows the Atlantic Road, a scenic coastal highway connecting small islands with bridges across the open ocean. Several viewpoints allow stops along the way before reaching the coastal town of Kristiansund.

The final driving day returns to Trondheim through inland valleys and coastal landscapes before departure from Trondheim Airport.

Day 1: Arrive in Trondheim and Explore the City Centre
Arrive at Trondheim Airport and collect your rental car. Drive to your centrally located accommodation and check in for one night. Spend the rest of the day exploring the riverfront, Nidaros Cathedral area, and the historic streets of the city centre.

Day 2: Drive from Trondheim to Dovrefjell
Leave Trondheim and drive south toward the mountain landscapes of Dovrefjell National Park. The journey passes through Oppdal and scenic mountain valleys before reaching Dovre. Check in to your accommodation for two nights at Dovregubbens Hall ("The Hall of the Mountain King") or a similar mountain lodge.

Day 3: Join a Musk Ox Safari in Dovrefjell
Join a guided musk ox safari departing from Hjerkinn Fjellstue. The tour explores the mountain plateau of Dovrefjell where wild musk ox roam freely. Your guide shares knowledge about the animals, local ecology, and the surrounding national park landscape. The excursion takes place on foot across mountain terrain.

Day 4: Drive from Dovre to Åndalsnes and Ride the Romsdalen Gondola
Travel west toward the Romsdal region. The route passes through mountain valleys and small villages including Dombås and Lesja. After arriving in Åndalsnes ride the Romsdalen Gondola which travels from the fjord to the mountain plateau above the town. Check in for one night and enjoy views across the Romsdal valley.

Day 5: Drive the Atlantic Road to Kristiansund
Drive north toward the Atlantic Ocean along one of Norway’s most famous coastal routes. The Atlantic Road connects small islands and skerries with a series of bridges and viewpoints. Optional stops along the route include Vevang Culture Park and the Atlantic Road viewpoints before arriving in Kristiansund for one night.

Day 6: Drive from Kristiansund to Trondheim
Return to Trondheim through inland landscapes and coastal regions. Optional stops include Straumsund Bridge and the town of Orkanger before arriving back in Trondheim. Check in for your final night in the city.

Day 7: Depart from Trondheim
Drive to Trondheim Airport and return your rental car before departure.
