What to expect?
After meeting the guide at our adventure office in central Alta, conveniently situated in the heart of the city, we start the evening with a small presentation about the Northern Lights. This is to give you an understanding of how it occurs, then we look at the conditions for this particular evening. We cannot say in advance where we are going, this depends on the weather forecast and northern lights forecast. We use our local knowledge to find the best places to experience the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky. The tour will be conducted in a modern minivan with refreshments (drinks and snacks) available enroute.
Anticipation builds as you settle in to witness the colorful show in the night sky. To enhance your experience, your guide will provide warming tea or coffee along with snacks, ensuring your comfort as you soak in the spectacle. Seeing the Northern Lights may involve some waiting and patience, in the most optimal spots
After the celestial display concludes, we return to the adventure store in the city center, where the journey began. While our dedicated guides will endeavor to unveil the northern lights for you, it's important to note that these natural phenomena are beyond our control, and sightings are subject to the whims of nature. While we cannot guarantee their appearance, our commitment to creating a memorable and enriching experience remains unwavering.
The mystery surrounding the light has given us many myths and legends over the years. Everything from heroes who lit up the sky to mysterious figures and warnings of danger. The light has also been given many names and one of the names the Sami use for the light is Guovssahas, which means the light that can be heard.
Alta's remarkable suitability as a prime location for observing the northern lights becomes clear when considering Kristian Birkeland's choice to commence his research at Halddetoppen in 1899. It's worth noting that Birkeland's pioneering work connecting the northern lights to electromagnetic storms from the sun cements his legacy as the father of this mesmerizing natural wonder. The prevailing dry and stable climate in Alta creates optimal conditions for witnessing the captivating northern lights. During your journey, not only will you engage in the quest for this enchanting phenomenon, but you'll also immerse yourself in the stunning Arctic nature and untamed wilderness that define the region.
