Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier, covering approximately 374 km². It lies within the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park in Nordland. The glacier stretches from Saltfjellet in the east to Holandsfjorden in the west.
Svartisen consists of two main glaciers: Vestre Svartisen and Østre Svartisen.
Vestre Svartisen is the larger of the two glaciers, spanning around 260 km². It extends from Saltfjellet to Holandsfjorden and is unique because it reaches all the way down to the coast. One of its prominent glacier arms is Engabreen, a popular tourist attraction in Helgeland. Engabreen offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore crevasses, blue ice, and stunning views.
Østre Svartisen, located in Nordland county, covers approximately 114 km². It ranks as the fourth largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland. This mountain glacier sits at an elevation between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level.
Svartisen is notable for being the lowest glacier in mainland Europe, with an elevation of only 20 meters above sea level. Its 60 glacier tongues weave through surrounding valleys, framed by mountains towering over 1,500 meters high. The western Svartisen ice cap occupies 201 km² and lies just inside the Arctic Circle. Most of it rests on a high plateau around 1,000 meters above sea level.
