What to expect?
All of our guides are experienced and will underway fill you in on the rich history of the area. This experience leaves you with the feeling of being out in the wild as you sit there on the edge of the fjord watching the sun disappear behind the mighty mountains in the evening.
Day 1: Departure from our base in Flåm
Our base is conveniently located on the beach in Flåm, just a short walk from the Flåm railway station. Upon arriving at the beach, you'll see our kayaks neatly lined up and one of our friendly guides ready to welcome you and your fellow adventurers.
The tour starts at 9am with a meet-and-greet session for everyone to get acquainted. After ensuring everyone is familiar with the plan for our Fjord Explorer tour, it's time for action!
We conduct essential safety drills and provide instruction on basic kayaking techniques, crucial for everyone's safety and confidence on the water. After, we break for lunch – prepared by our guide to refuel the excited explorers!
Good news: no need to carry heavy backpacks on this adventure holiday!
Next, our guides assist you on kayak packing, showing some tips and tricks on how to keep everything dry and organized. Once the kayaks are packed, you can leave any excess luggage at our base to pick up after the tour. With everyone ready, we bid goodbye to Flåm and embark on our kayaking tour through Aurlandsfjord. As we paddle, we'll spot plenty of waterfalls, interesting rock formations, lush fields, farms and villages.
This area also appeals to history enthusiasts, as we pass by ancient Viking graves, with our guide sharing tales of Norway's adventurous past.
After several hours of paddling, and hopefully some animal sightings, we arrive at our first stop – Undredal. This little town is the last settlement before venturing into the Nærøyfjorden. Our guide gives a brief tour of this unique place.
Fun facts about Undredal: It's home to more goats than humans. It served as an inspiration for the movie Frozen. It houses Scandinavia's smallest functioning stave church.
After the exploration of the town, we get back into our kayaks and continue our guided kayak tour towards our first campsite – Stokko. Upon arrival, our guide will provide instructions on how to set up your tents and make yourself comfortable while they start preparing the evening meal for the group. This is often mentioned as a trip highlight by many participants!
Prepare to be impressed, what meals an experienced guide can create with simple camping equipment. If weather conditions permit, we'll have a campfire. Regardless, great food is guaranteed.
Day 2: Hiking and Paddling the Nærøyfjord
We continue our kayaking adventure in the Norwegian fjords. You wake up to the smell of breakfast, as our guide is up early to serve food. Slowly, one by one, everyone is popping their head out of the tents, greeted by the breathtaking view from our first campsite overlooking the fjord. You are now at the edge of Aurlandsfjord, just a couple of kilometers away from Nærøyfjord. From here, you can see straight out to the main fjord, Sognefjord, which, with its 204 km length, is the longest fjord in Norway.
After breakfast, it's time to pack down the gear and fit it all back into the kayak. Depending on the weather and group energy level, we might embark on a steep, breathtaking hike up to Stigen farm and further up to Beitelen.
The views from the top of the mountain are incredibly beautiful, offering a perfect view of the meeting point of all three fjords – Nærøyfjord, Sognefjord, and Aurlandsfjord.
After the hike we continue kayaking. As we kayak for a short while, we turn into Nærøyfjord. As you see the World Heritage-listed fjord for the first time, you will instantly understand why it's on the list. Nærøyfjord is significantly narrower than Aurlandsfjord and appears even more impressive. As you kayak, your gaze tends to be more upward than forward, allowing you to fully enjoy the view as you slowly make your way to the next campsite, stroke by stroke. On day two, a new experience awaits us – lunch served right on the fjord!
An eagle, otter, or seals may swing by to greet the group!
Arriving at the campsite Odnes, we unpack our kayaks, pitch our tents, and relax. Another lovely dinner is cooked, and we unwind, go for a walk to stretch our legs and enjoy the landscape. As night falls, the campfire creates a cozy atmosphere, making it easy to drift off to sleep in your tent.
Day 3: A more relaxed day returning to Flåm
Our final day is more relaxed. After enjoying breakfast along the edge of a majestic Norwegian fjord, we venture off to explore a cultural and historical gem – the historic postal road along Nærøyfjord. With that being said, the trail is not steep and has been walked for ages, offering beautiful views. Odnes, our campsite, is a hay field with incredibly lush and dense vegetation. Here we can admire the beautiful waterfall – Odnesfossen.
If you're brave enough, you can take a dip in the fjord!
As we return to the campsite, we'll enjoy our lunch and pack down the camp. It's time to embark on the final stretch of kayaking into Gudvangen.
As you paddle through Nærøyfjorden, the views remain just as breathtaking. On the other side of the fjord, we'll see the cozy village of Bakka. There is a chance to see sheep traversing the steep mountain path just outside Bakka. After a few hours navigating through this fjord landscape, you'll arrive at Gudvangen. A van will be waiting to collect all of you along with your kayaks and gear.
Even though the paddle from Flåm to Gudvangen took 3 days, the return trip to Flåm only takes 30 minutes.
Upon returning to Flåm, we'll transport the kayaks back to our boathouse on the beach and separate your private belongings from the company gear. Once all formalities are completed, we'll sit down together for one last snack as we recap everyone's highlights and challenges from the tour. This is the perfect time to exchange contacts and photos with your new friends.
Here, we bid our farewells, hoping you've had an unforgettable time with us and that we might see you again on another one of our future adventures.
