What to expect?
This prerequisite allows us to initiate the course on grade 2 waters and adequately reinforce these skills. Over two days, our goal is to transition you to the knowledge and safety awareness required for grade 3.
Prerequisites:
Completion of an Introductory Whitewater Course or having paddled grade 2 whitewater at least 5 times in the past year.
Ability to paddle straight on flat water, ferry glide, and break-in & break-out on grade 2 whitewater.
Comfortability on grade 1 whitewater.
Skills Covered:
Posture, balance, leaning, and surfing techniques.
Effective paddling strokes and anticipation paddling from grade 1 to 3.
Reading water, maintaining group awareness, scouting, and mastering basic throw-rope techniques.
Perfecting break-ins, break-outs, ferries, and linking maneuvers.
Introduction to rolling on both sides and hand rolls.
Whitewater safety and rescue are essential components. Depending on the day and course progression, other aspects of safety may also be explored.
Whitewater Kayak Level 2 Course Content:
Typically, your group will comprise no more than 4 participants with one instructor. Your initial meeting with the instructor will allow for a discussion on experiences and goals, which in conjunction with the weather and water conditions, helps shape the day's itinerary.
We utilize a local Grade 2 river section for honing essential skills and advancing your paddling. The following day, we choose a river apt for the group, which may include some Grade 3 sections. Potential rivers include the Vosso, Raundalselva, and Strandaelva.
Throughout the course, focus lies on:
Personal paddling coaching and development.
Safe river running skill acquisition.
Roll development or refinement.
Your instructor will share insights on other notable whitewater venues in Norway and around the world, ensuring you leave with inspiration and the know-how to explore further.
Itinerary:
Meeting spot: Blue lounge tent by the lake, near the new gondola and in front of Fleischer’s Hotel.
Recommended: Arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time.
Activities include: Check-in, greet the instructor, gear outfitting, river transport, safety instructions, river exercises (with a lunch break), and rapids navigation. The day concludes with a warm meal after unpacking and a session evaluation.
