Day 1: Explore the Stockholm Archipelago and Learn Kayaking
We will pick you up at a central location in Stockholm city for a 45-minute transfer to our Kayak Center. You will be welcomed by our certified wilderness and kayak guides, who will give a thorough briefing before you set out on your trip. Over a Swedish Fika (beverage + snack), you will discuss the archipelago, kayaking equipment, safety, weather, and navigation. Using our maps, recommended kayak trail routes, and the GPS on your phone, it’s easy to navigate. Together with the guides, you will decide on a suitable route depending on the weather and the length of your trip. The guides will help you pack your kayaks and answer all your questions. They are also available 24/7 via the Kayak Trail Guide Phone.
Set off in stable two-person kayaks and feel the wind in your hair. Soon, seabirds and waves are the only sounds as you leave the mainland and kayak eastward toward the small uninhabited islands. You pass by Runmarö, known since the 13th century for its limestone, which was used in many of Stockholm’s oldest buildings, including parts of Riddarholm Church.
In the afternoon, search for the perfect campsite among the many small islets. Set up your tent and equipment, enjoy a refreshing swim, and cook a meal on the outdoor stove using the pre-set food menus. Eating in nature makes the food taste fantastic, and the waves and wind provide a peaceful night’s sleep.
Day 2: Discover Bullerö Nature Reserve
After breakfast (and perhaps a morning skinny dip, a “Swedish classic”), plan your route for the day. Depending on the weather, this may be the day to visit Bullerö Nature Reserve.
Bullerö is a classic archipelago spot, rich in bird life, typical archipelago nature, and cultural history. People have lived off the resources of the island since the late 1600s.
Spend time exploring, go on a short hike, or visit the hunting lodge of Bruno Liljefors, featuring art from Swedish artists Anders Zorn, Axel Sjöberg, and Albert Engström from the early 1900s. Finish the day with a relaxing sauna session in the cosy public sauna.
Day 3: Explore Möja and the Möja Nature Reserves
Depending on your route, day 3 may be perfect for discovering the island of Möja and the Möja Nature Reserve just east of the main island. Stop in the village of Berg to replenish snacks and refill water, and enjoy a fika before continuing toward the Möja Reserve.
With hundreds of small islands stretching to the horizon, the Möja Reserve is a cherished spot. Use your kayak to explore freely, find your own island, and make it your campsite for the night. If you have an extra day, this is a great place to linger.
The Last Day: Heading Back to Civilization
Enjoy one last morning on the islands. After several days on the water, you will feel calm, focused, and a bit tired from kayaking and hiking. Stop for a long lunch on an island, perhaps take an afternoon swim, and enjoy a coffee before paddling back.
In the late afternoon, arrive at the Kayak Center. The staff will take care of the equipment while you enjoy snacks, a shower, or another sauna session. After a debrief with the guide, a transfer will take you back to the city drop-off zone, giving you time to relax before dinner.
Tip: Round off your experience in Stockholm with an extra night in the city and a day of sightseeing before returning home.
