What to expect?
Þumall
is 1279m above see level. Back in the old days was this mountain sed to be unclimbeble and if you see the north wall of the colum you get why.
It was first climb in 1974 and did not get meny visitors over the next years.
This rock is a basalt colum based on south edge of Vatnajökkli and rise 120m over the ice cap.
We don’t recomend to try hike from skaftafell to the summit of þumall in one day. The hike to the base of þumall takes about one day, we recomend to do this in 2-2 1/2days.
First day we walk in Morsárdal long wally we follow the river and old river banks to the end of the vallyright under Hnútudal hills that we will go up the day after.
Thare is nice to put up camp to sleep and gain power for a long day ahead.
Second day is a long one, From the camp side up to the the Þumall is 1200m elevasion gain, over different landscape and stuning scenary. From top of Hnútudalur to Þumall is 250m long ridge that can be challecing if there is no snow. We traversse under Þumall to get to the North side to start the climb. This traversse is on a glacier so we need to rope up for that part. The climb its self take from 2-3hours and is not the hardest climb in the world but it is buitiful.
After we appsaeil down we start the hike back to the camp to take down the tents and walk back to Skaftafell.
It is also posible to do this in one day. To do this in one day we take a helicopter from skaftafell and fly stright to Þumall. After the climb we get a helicopter to pick us up or we can hike back to Skaftafell. Both opsons are nice its just depends on you,and what you want to do :)
It's not same price for the hiking and the helicopter for more info contact us.

What to bring
Be sure to pack warm clothes along with rain gear, including waterproof pants and a jacket, to stay comfortable in changing conditions. A down or Primaloft jacket can be especially nice to have during lunch breaks when temperatures drop. Wear warm socks and bring two pairs for extra comfort, and make sure you have good hiking boots for proper support on the trail. Don’t forget a hat and gloves, a 30–45 liter backpack to carry your gear, and enough food and water for the day. Sunglasses are important for eye protection, and hiking poles can be very helpful for balance and stability on varied terrain.
