Tour itinerary:
Day 1: 09:00 Meet the guide at the VisitBergen tourist information, or arrange for pickup at your hotel. We'll embark on a drive from Bergen to Nordheimsund, transitioning through the scenic Hardangerfjord.
Our journey takes us over the mountainous plateau of "Kvamskogen," proceeding steeply and scenically down towards Hardangerfjord until we reach Nordheimsund. Along the way, we'll pause to appreciate two beautiful waterfalls, Fossen Bratte and Steindalsfossen. The drive is estimated to take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
From Norheimsund, we'll proceed to one of Western Norway's most beautiful valleys, Fitjadalen, where our hike begins. This drive will take roughly 30 minutes. Our destination is the Breidablikk cabin, a unique shelter boasting a panoramic view, owned by The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Situated at 1150 meters above sea level, the cabin promises an exciting stay.
Ahead of us lies an ascent of about 950 meters. As we progress, the view becomes increasingly spectacular. This is a perfect opportunity to pause, turn around, and take a break! We anticipate spending between 4-6 hours on this hike, inclusive of breaks. The path is well-defined, but the terrain presents challenges due to rocky stretches and potential wet conditions.
Option 1: We have reserved beds at the cabin and we spend the night here.
Option 2: We descend back to the fjord and spend the night in the historic Sandven Thon Hotel in Nordheimsund. We estimate that the journey back down to the car to take 3-4 hours.
This excursion perfectly melds fjord and mountain experiences; however, it's not an easy trip. For those desiring a more leisurely option, we can alter the destination to a simpler mountain tour around Nordheimsund, featuring views of Hardangerfjord, with an overnight stay at the Sandven Hotel.
Day 2: We start our day awakening high in the mountains, followed by breakfast and preparations for the descent. After approximately 4 hours, we'll find ourselves back at the fjord, possibly tempted to indulge in a refreshing swim before heading back to Bergen. We expect to return to Bergen around 4 p.m. on the second day.
